In Mumbai, nurse Prabha’s routine is thrown into disarray when she receives an unexpected gift from her ex-husband. Her younger roommate, Anu, tries in vain to find a place in the city to be intimate with her boyfriend. The first Indian film to win the prestigious Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024. This film was great, but I struggle to see what makes it stand out. While the film is artistic, it lacks a compelling narrative. It seems to tick the right boxes – a European black woman directing – but beyond that, what makes it stand out? I’m confused by the critical acclaim. The acting was solid, the soundtrack minimal, and the direction decent. I think the inclusion of nudity and explicit scenes is what ultimately sold the film. Is this really what filmmakers have to resort to to please Western audiences? The pacing is incredibly slow, which probably appealed to French audiences and contributed to its selection at Cannes. Cannes loves films like this!
