The female lead doesn’t have a single line of dialogue in the entire movie
A Chinese woman lives for herself in silence, celebrating the prosperous Belle Epoque with song and dance. I never tell about the plot in my review, you can find it everywhere!
I watched this movie without knowing anything about it
Then I thought “oh he’s so clever, he’s using a lot of old films to make it look like it was filmed 20 years ago” and I thought “uhm this movie is way more experimental and artistic compared to his other films”. I watched this movie because I really enjoyed Mountain Might Depart and Ash Is Purest White and A Touch of Sin.
And this one feels more like a collection of scenes, different styles all put together
It has a dreamlike, floating quality somehow, it feels like a documentary and it’s also fiction, but it works, mainly because Zhao Tao has this magical presence on screen and you watch it wondering what she’ll do next. After finishing it, I looked up reviews on the internet and found out that it’s actually made with footage the director had filmed before.
So I would definitely recommend it
If you are watching this title, it means you are already open and ready to watch something different than the mainstream US movies.
